U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Expands Options for Residential Care Facilities to Use GBI’s Green Globes Certification

Portland, Ore.- February 20, 2025 – The Green Building Initiative, Inc. (GBI) is pleased to announce that GBI’s Green Globes Residential Care for Existing Buildings certification can now be used on a case-by-case basis for Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) and Board & Care (B&C) projects with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Lean Thinking Office.

HUD Mortgagee Letter, ML-2022-13 allows HUD to approve additional certifications for use by these programs. Following a thorough review and analysis, HUD has determined that they will now consider projects pursuing Green Globes certification using the Green Globes for Residential Care program version 1.0 on a case-by-case basis, as the Mortgagee Letter requires. Green Globes certification requirements for these projects can be found here

Borrowers who wish to use Green Globes as the certification for a Section 232 transaction must send the following information from their Energy Professional to Lean Thinking, in order to move forward:  https://www.hud.gov/federal_housing_administration/healthcare_facilities/residential_care/knowledgebase

“We’re excited to have this opportunity to work with these vitally important projects,” said Vicki Worden, President & CEO of GBI. “As a certifying body that has a depth of experience supporting sustainability objectives in hospitals, clinics, senior living and other medical office buildings, we can attest that these programs serve people in our communities who are most in need. Leveraging GBI’s Green Globes provides a robust yet cost-effective roadmap and certification option for these residential facilities working to provide best possible living experience for their residents.”
