What is GBI’s history of ANSI Standard Development?

Since becoming an ANSI-accredited Standards Developing Organization in 2005 and developing their first standard in 2010, GBI currently has two standards under Continuous Maintenance: ANSI/GBI 01-2024: Assessment Protocol for Design, New Construction, and Major Renovations and ANSI/GBI 02-2025: Assessment Protocol for Existing Buildings. Building on this foundation, GBI is now developing two additional green building standards, one for Core & Shell and another for Sustainable Interiors, which will continue GBI’s legacy of advancing certification programs through a true consensus process that includes peer review and public comment.

What is the Sustainable Interiors Draft Standard?

The Sustainable Interiors (SI) Draft Standard provides a method for assessing commercial buildings relative to the tenets of integrated design and contemporary best practices for high-performance green buildings.

This assessment method addresses the design and construction of a project with respect to reducing life cycle resource consumption, waste, and global/regional/local environmental impacts; contributing to human and ecological system health; and providing performance feedback to owners and communities on indicators such as energy and water performance.

The SI Draft Standard applies to new construction interior fit-out projects, and focuses solely on issues within the interior architect’s or interior designer’s scope of work.

Rating System

The Draft Standard includes a points-based assessment rating system that allows users to identify solutions that earn points for actions likely to achieve levels of performance commonly valued as having desirable environmental and related efficiency outcomes.

Environmental Assessment Areas

The five Environmental Assessment Areas within the Draft Standard include Project Management, Energy, Water Efficiency, Materials, and Indoor Environment.
