GBI Commends State of Maryland for Inclusion of Green Globes, Sustainability Requirements in 2025 Maryland Qualified Allocation Plan (QAP)

Portland, Ore.- February 10, 2025 – The Green Building Initiative (GBI) congratulates Governor Wes Moore and Maryland leaders on the finalization of the 2025 Maryland Qualified Allocation Plan (QAP) on February 6. As part of its requirements, the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) will award points for sustainable design and operations features. GBI’s Green Globes certification, among others, provide applicants with maximum points under the Sustainable Features criteria.

“GBI supports the inclusion of sustainability requirements and Green Globes certification in a growing list of QAPs across the U.S., now including Maryland,” said Vicki Worden, GBI President & CEO. “GBI is committed to improving occupant health and wellness and delivering sustainable and resilient buildings through accessible certification.”

The Maryland QAP encourages the private sector to invest in the construction and rehabilitation of housing for low- and moderate-income individuals and families by providing qualified project owners with Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). The QAP and the Multifamily Rental Financing Program Guide (the “Guide”) are effective as of January 23, 2025.

Of nearly 800 million square feet certified with GBI’s Green Globes and Guiding Principles Compliance, approximately one half are multifamily space. Green Globes is ideally suited for multifamily buildings and campuses, offering compliance pathways for a rigorous, not rigid approach, and provides personalized guidance and support throughout the assessment process. Green Globes certification also contributes to an improved GRESB score, a global benchmarking system, in increasing demand by multifamily stakeholders.
