Abbey Benesh

Director of Advocacy

In her role as Director of Advocacy, Abbey is dedicated to advancing the use of GBI’s green building standards across federal, state, and local governments. She does this through educating communities toward the adoption and use of GBI’s programs, building and enhancing bipartisan relationships with community and industry leaders, elected officials, and others, and working to remove market barriers that currently preclude the adoption of GBI’s programs.

Abbey is a Utah-based attorney with a focus on environmental advocacy and animal protection through her law and policy work. Abbey obtained her law degree from the University of Utah’s S.Q. Quinney College of Law with certificates in Public Interest Law and Environmental and Natural Resources Law. Since graduating, Abbey has worked for a number of nonprofit organizations focusing on a wide range of issues, from retail pet sale bans to a Rights of Nature resolution for Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Abbey also serves on the Board for two nonprofit organizations local to SLC: Save Our Canyons and Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering.

When she’s not working, you can probably find Abbey in the mountains training for her next ultramarathon, roadtripping in her converted camper van, or attempting to tire out her two Australian shepherds.
