How To Shape the Future of Sustainable Buildings

Want to Shape the Future of the Built Environment? GBI Needs Your Expertise

Whether you’re an energy engineer, sustainability consultant, water systems specialist, or building operations professional, your knowledge can directly influence the standards that define green building practice across the country.

GBI is actively recruiting subject matter experts to serve on working groups and Consensus Bodies for several new and expanding programs. Here’s where you can make an impact.

Get Involved: Open Volunteer Opportunities

Cycle Renovations — New Program

Not every sustainability win comes from a ground-up build. GBI is developing a new recognition program for property owners and managers tackling smaller-scale renovation projects — think roof replacements, façade repairs, HVAC upgrades, plumbing improvements, and interior renovations.

Each protocol is modeled after the Green Globes certification system and scaled for projects that don’t fit the traditional certification mold.

Ready to help build this from the ground up? Email [email protected] to join the Cycle Renovations Working Group.

Journey to Net Zero™ Water — Program Expansion

GBI’s Journey to Net Zero program is expanding to water. The new water protocol will address efficiency, reuse systems, and potentially water replenishment credits — giving building owners a meaningful way to track and benchmark their water performance alongside energy.

Expertise in water conservation or water systems? Email [email protected] to join the Journey to Net Zero Water Working Group.

GBI Standards Development: Core & Shell, Sustainable Interiors & Existing Buildings

Consensus Body and Subcommittee

GBI is forming Consensus Bodies and Subcommittees to develop updated rating systems for Core & Shell and Sustainable Interiors projects. If you have hands-on experience with cold, warm, dark, or gray shell projects — or interior fit-outs — this is your opportunity to help set the standard.

Each Consensus Body will review public input and guide the development of pre-draft and draft standards through GBI’s ANSI-approved consensus procedures.

To apply, complete the Consensus Body Application and Subcommittee Application.

What to Expect as a Volunteer

Volunteering with GBI is designed to fit into a busy professional schedule. Most volunteers participate in 1–3 virtual meetings per year for each group they join, conducted via GoToWebinar for flexible, remote participation.

GBI membership is not required. If you have relevant expertise and a commitment to advancing sustainable building practice, you’re encouraged to apply — regardless of your organization type or affiliation.

Ready to Shape What’s Next?

Your expertise matters. The standards GBI develops today set the benchmarks that building owners, operators, and design teams will work toward for years to come.
