Building owners and project teams may now opt for Green Globes certification to meet Baltimore Green Construction Code requirements.
Portland, Ore. – The Green Building Initiative (GBI) praises the City of Baltimore, Maryland, for its inclusion of Green Globes certification in its Green Construction Code, adopted in November 2020. The City now references the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) ({2012} 2018 edition) for construction requirements that intended to “reduce the negative impacts and increase the positive impacts of the built environment on the natural environment and building occupants.” While the code requires all permits for commercial and certain multifamily residential buildings to meet the IgCC 2018 standards, a Two Green Globes (or higher) is offered as an alternate compliance pathway. A Two Green Globes rating has been achieved when a project achieves 55-69% of the total applicable criteria.
The inclusion of Green Globes to the Baltimore Construction Code follows state recognition in the Maryland High Performance Green Building Program. GBI has certified nearly 4.6 million square feet in the State of Maryland with Green Globes, including Multifamily housing projects, medical offices, financial offices, grocery stores, laboratories, museums, and hospitals, to name a few. GBI has also verified another million square feet of US Department of VA space with its federal Guiding Principles Compliance program. “GBI looks forward to continuing to support building owners and project teams with Green Globes certification and to the City of Baltimore and state of Maryland with their sustainability goals,” said Vicki Worden, GBI President & CEO. “The adaptability of the Green Globes system is proven to be effective and efficient for certifying all types of commercial and multifamily buildings regardless of size, budget, or function.”
GBI’s reputation for excellence has been earned by applying a tailored approach to certification. GBI’s approach pairs highly qualified third-party assessors that bring significant expertise in the design and operations of sustainable building with project teams from the earliest stages of their efforts right through an onsite assessment and walk through of the buildings, plus delivery of a customized final certification report.
GBI is pleased to offer education and support to interested A/E/C firms, sustainability consultants, and building owners pursuing Green Globes certification. Please contact info@thegbi.org to schedule a meeting or presentation.
